I really enjoy reading exciting historical fiction, such as Pillars of the Earth and World Without End by Ken Follett and The Lost Army by Valerio Massimo Manfredi. So this novel by Bernard Cornwall sounded like just my kind of thing
It is about a young boy named Uhtred, who is born into the Aristocracy of Ninth Century Northumbria, but is orphaned at the age of ten and captured and adopted by a Dane. who teaches him the ways of the Viking. Yet his fate remains inexplicably bound with that of Alfred, King of Wessex, who rules over the only kingdom which has survived the Danish assault.
He grows up and eventually marries. However his wife & child vanish during a Viking invasion and he is forced into a confrontation with a great Viking Chieftain in order to find their whereabouts, and he starts to discover his true allegiance….
