United States Grand Prix 2012

The United States Grand Prix 2012 took place in Austin, Texas on Sunday 18th November, and saw Lewis Hamilton ending a poor run of form to top the podium, a victory which made him “massively proud”.Meanwhile Sebastian Vettel finished in second place and Fernando Alonso eventually finished third after sweeping up to fourth on the opening lap and inheriting third when Australian Mark Webber retired in the second Red Bull car and has set up a final race shoot-out with Vettel for the world drivers’s championship.

Originally Alonso qualified in ninth place for Ferrari but was elevated to eighth because of a gearbox-change penalty for Frenchman Romain Grosjean of Lotus and, on Sunday, advanced another position – and to the clean right side of the grid – when his team decided to incur a penalty for Brazilian Felipe Massa by breaking the seal on his car’s gearbox. He is now 13 points behind defending champion Sebastian Vettel heading into next Sunday’s showdown in Brazil. The Spaniard has not won a race since the German Grand Prix in July and needs to finish at least third to have a chance of winning the title in Sao Paulo. If he wins, he would need Vettel to finish outside the top four.

British Touring Car champion and Car Racing Driver Tim Harvey was born 20th November 1961
