Tribute to author E.Nesbit

English  author and poet Edith Nesbit sadly passed away on 4th May 1924. Born 15th August 1858 she wrote or collaborated on over 60 books of fiction for children, several of which have been adapted for film and television. She was also a political activist and co-founded the Fabian Society, a precursor to the modern Labour Party. Nesbit published approximately 40 books for children, including novels, collections of stories and picture books. Collaborating with others, she published almost as many more.According to her biographer Julia Briggs, Nesbit was “the first modern writer for children”: “(Nesbit) helped to reverse the great tradition of children’s literature inaugurated by Lewis Carroll, George MacDonald and Kenneth Grahame, in turning away from their secondary worlds to the tough truths to be won from encounters with things-as-they-are, previously the province of adult novels.” Briggs also credits Nesbit with having invented the children’s adventure story.

Noel Coward was a great admirer of hers and, in a letter to an early biographer Noel Streatfeild, wrote “she had an economy of phrase, and an unparalleled talent for evoking hot summer days in the English countryside.” Among Nesbit’s best-known books are The Story of the Treasure Seekers (1898) The Railway Children and The Wouldbegoods (1899), which both recount stories about the Bastables, a middle class family that has fallen on relatively hard times. The Railway Children is also extremely well known. Her children’s writing also included numerous plays and collections of verse. She created an innovative body of work that combined realistic, contemporary children in real-world settings with magical objects – what would now be classed as contemporary fantasy – and adventures and sometimes travel to fantastic worlds. In doing so, she was a direct or indirect influence on many subsequent writers, including P. L. Travers (author of Mary Poppins), Edward Eager, Diana Wynne Jones and J. K. Rowling. C. S. Lewis wrote of her influence on his Narnia series and mentions the Bastable children in The Magician’s Nephew. Michael Moorcock would go on to write a series of steampunk novels with an adult Oswald Bastable (of The Treasure Seekers) as the lead character.Nesbit also wrote for adults, including eleven novels, short stories and four collections of horror stories.  Nesbit sadly passed away on 4 May 1924, but has left a long lasting legacy in the form of some great novels and Poems

Star Wars Day

May 4 is considered aholiday by Star Wars fans to celebrate Star Wars culture, books and honor the films. It is called Star Wars Day because of the popularity of a common punspoken on this day. Because the phrase “May the Force be with you” is a famous quote often spoken in the Star Wars films, fans commonly say “May the fourth be with you” on this day. Current day Star Wars fans were not the first to introduce the line “May the fourth be with you”: when Margaret Thatcher was elected Britain’s first female Prime Minister on May 4, 1979, her party placed an advertisement in The London Evening News that said  May the Fourth Be with You, Maggie. Congratulations.” This reading of the line has also been recorded in the UK Parliament’s Hansard.

In a2005 interview on German news TV channel N24, Star Wars creator George Lucas was asked to say the famous sentence “May the Force be with you.” The interpreter simultaneously interpreted the sentence into German as Am 4. Mai sind wir bei Ihnen (“On May 4 we are with you.”). This was captured by TV Total and aired on May 18, 2005.In 2011, the first organized celebration of Star Wars Day took place in Toronto, Ontario, Canada at the Toronto Underground Cinema. Produced by Sean Ward & Alice Quinn, festivities included an Original Trilogy Trivia Game Show; a costume contest with celebrity judges; and the web’s best tribute films, mash-ups, parodies, and remixes on the big screen. The second annual edition took place on Friday, May 4, 2012.]In 2013, Disney’sHollywood Studios is celebrating the holiday with several Star Wars events and festivities.Honoring the day the humanoid robot Nao created a unique greeting to all Star Wars fans.

Actress Carrie Fisher  has also confirmed she will reprise the role of Princess Leia Organa, which catapulted her to fame in the original Star Wars trilogy (Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back and Episode VI: Return Of The Jedi) and will be appearing in one or more of the three new Star Wars films currently in the pipeline following the buyout of George Lucas’ company Lucasfilm by Disney last Autumn for $4.1bn. He has also revealed that he is in the final stages of negotiation with Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford, but wouldnt say whether the negotiations were successful or not.Meanwhile Ian McDiarmid, who played Emperor Palpatine in both the prequel and original Star Wars series, has become the latest actor to consider a return under the new Disney regime. While admitting it might be tough to come back from his ignominious end at the finale of 1983’s Return of the Jedi. Although he was cloned in “Dark Empire” but I don’t know whether this story is considered “Canon”

IT also looks like  Harrison Ford may finally get that Han Solo death scene he wanted in Episode VI (or May not).Star Wars: Episode VII, the first of the trilogy, will be directed by JJ Abrams and written by Michael Arndt and is chalked up for release in 2015. Disney executives are also planning to release the follow-up movies “every two to three years” after Episode VII. George Lucas is expected to outliine the three screenplays with Michael Arndt, who wrote Toy Story 3. writing them in full. Disney boss Bob Iger has also hinted at several spin-off films based on individual characters, which are currently in the very early stages of development, with both Larry Kasdan, writer of Empire Strikes Back, and Simon Kinberg, producer of This Means War, working on them. The company has also decided to shelve the planned release of Star Wars Episodes II and III in 3D next Autumn to focus on the new movies
