I would like to read Whispering Shadows by Jan Philipp Sandker is The first in a gripping suspenseful new trilogy by the internationally bestselling author of The Art of Hearing Heartbeats and was given away as part of World Book Night 2016. The story follows a retired American expat journalist Paul Leibovitz who was once an ambitious advisor, dedicated father, and loving husband. Sadly after living for nearly thirty years in Hong Kong, tragedy strikes when Paul and his ex-wife Meredith lose their eight-year-old son Justin to cancer. Their marriage disintegrates due mainly to Paul’s inability to move on with his life. So Paul retreats from the world and now lives in solitude on Lamma Island in Hong Kong, enjoying the peace and avoiding crowds and conflict.

On the anniversary of his son’s death he hikes up the Peak and whilst resting at the top he gets into conversation with Elizabeth Owen, a distressed American whose son has disappeared in Shenzheng. Paul reluctantly agrees to contact his police friend superintendent Zhang Lin in Schenzhen to see if he can help. However his life is thrown into turmoil When Less than twenty-four hours later, Elizabeth’s son Michael Owen is found dead in Shenzhen.

Invigorated by a newfound purpose, Paul sets out to investigate the murder with help from Christine and Zhang, however they soon find themselves descending deeper into the murky Shenzhen underworld as they discover dark secrets hidden beneath China’s booming new wealth, including rich businessmen with expensive degrees corrupting the judicial system for their own sinister purposes
